Frequently Asked Questions To run a Forest School you will need to obtain a Level 3 qualification. This will enable you to deliver Forest School sessions. The Level 3 course covers areas such as First Aid in the outdoors, practical work and development and learning in the outdoors.
Where can I run a Forest School?
Forest Schools come in many different shapes and sizes, there is no “one size fits all” approach to Forest Schools. In our region we have Forest Schools that operate in large public access woodlands to small woodlands on school premises.
How long does training take?
OCN Level 1 Forest Schools Skills Award - An introduction for people interested in Forest Schools techniques.
This course involves 30 hours working in an outdoor setting combining theory and practical activities which include: carrying out tasks to support learners outdoors,identifying woodland life,using woodland as a resource for learning
OCN Level 3 Forest Schools Leaders Award - A leadership course for professionals, independents and those working with groups of children/young people.
The training comprises a first-aid outdoors weekend, a 5-day intensive training week, a 2-day residential and a one day tutorial and assessment
Training courses are for teachers, nursery nurses, LSA's and all interested in using Forest Schools techniques in their work environments.
For both courses, participants need to hold a current CRB certificate.

Is there funding available?
Yes- through the Forestry Commission East of England Forest School Woodland Improvement Grant. Funding will be used to provide financial support and the infrastructure for Forest Schools and can fund items such as training, wet weather gear and fencing.
You must be in the East of England to qualify for this grant.
